Department of Health and Human Services Announced Proposed Rule for Affordable Care Act

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced on Tuesday that the proposed rule for Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which will enact regulations that ban discrimination in health care. This is an historic milestone for health equity across the nation.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced on Tuesday that the proposed rule for Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which will enact regulations that ban discrimination in health care. This is an historic milestone for health equity across the nation.

The new regulations will prevent many types of discrimination in health care, including but not limited to:

Doctors refusing to treat patients because of patients’ gender identity

Hospitals turning away patients who do not speak English

Discrimination based on race, age, disability, or pre-existing conditions

These regulations are now open for public comment until November 9. Advocates can submit a formal comment to HHS to help shape these new anti-discrimination regulations.
