30 Sep AAHIVM Launches Dynamic HIV Management in Primary Care Education Platform
Washington, DC: The American Academy of HIV Medicine, the nation’s leading independent organization of healthcare professionals dedicated to providing excellence in HIV care and prevention, recently released the new HIV Management in Primary Care multi-media online activity. Housed within the Academy’s online Provider Education Center, the interactive module offers healthcare providers free continuing education credits for those seeking advanced knowledge in the primary care of a person with HIV (PWH).
While the digital curriculum was created to primarily assist the growing number of HIV Specialists offering primary care services, the Academy also understands that an increase of PWH are relying on their general practitioner to manage both their primary healthcare needs and their HIV care, rather than seeing an HIV Specialist. This is due primarily to the ever-growing workforce shortage of trained HIV care providers.
“We know that there is a dearth of trained HIV Specialists in the U.S., especially in rural parts of our country,” stated Bruce J. Packett, executive director of AAHIVM. “It is important that we expand the Academy’s educational offerings to address the needs of general practitioners seeking advanced understanding in addressing the clinical needs of people with HIV.”
While HIV has become less complicated to manage thanks to advances in therapies, it still requires a precise understanding of guidelines, screening requirements and pharmaceutical therapies that are unique to a person with HIV. The HIV Management in Primary Care platform offers in-depth modules covering the following topics:
- Cancer Screening
- CV Risk Assessment
- Immunization Update
- Neurocognitive Assessment
- Kidney Assessment
- Smoking Cessation
This content, which can be found on the Academy’s website under the Provider Education Center tab, provides free continuing education (CE) credit for a maximum total of 5.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. This activity will be available through August 7, 2021.
