World AIDS Day Statement from the Executive Director of the American Academy of HIV Medicine

Washington, DC (December 1, 2025) – A statement from Bruce J. Packet, II, the Executive Director of the American Academy of HIV Medicine:

“Today, World AIDS Day, is a moment to honor those we’ve lost, uplift the communities still fighting, and reaffirm the commitment needed to end the HIV epidemic. The Academy stands firm in its mission to empower a skilled and robust health care workforce that is able to intervene at all levels of prevention, care and treatment for those with or at risk of HIV.

Although the current federal administration is not commemorating World AIDS Day for the first time in 37 years, we will not support this erasure of HIV and AIDS history. Our community has seen hard-won progress and extraordinary scientific advances over these past four decades, and these advances have brought us closer than ever to ending HIV as a public health threat.

We honor the legacy of those who came before us, those affected by HIV who faced stigma and fear, and the providers who dedicated their professional lives to caring for those who needed it most, especially those in the LGBTQ community. The Academy will continue to work hand-in-hand with providers, communities and organizations to ensure equitable, accessible HIV care for all people. This World AIDS Day we rededicate ourselves to this objective; together we can ensure there will be an end to the HIV epidemic.”
